Microsoft Excel is a great product. I use it every day at work to do a number of tasks. I love when I find a good Excel tip or find a trick that I didn’t know about. It makes the program even more useful and I become more productive as a result.

There are a few Excel tricks that I use on a daily basis. I use them so much that I’m a little surprised when someone I’m working with doesn’t know them. When I show them these keyboard shortcuts they are happy to have an easier way to do a common Excel task.

This Excel Tip involves the use of the Control key. On your keyboard it’s labeled Ctrl. There are two of them on the keyboard. I usually use the one at the bottom left of the keyboard, but you can use whichever one that’s more convenient for you.

To use the Control key in a keyboard shortcut you simply hold the key down then press the letter or character you need to activate the function.

Control C, F, V. This is a great combination of keyboard shortcuts that I use together all the time. If the content of a cell is repeated in your spreadsheet and you need to find the repeated cells, just follow these steps.

1. Click on the cell that contains the information you need to search.

2. Hold down the Control key and press “C.” In Excel books this would be written as “Ctrl + C.” This key combination will place the cell’s contents in your clipboard.

3. Next, while still holding the Control key, press the “F” key. This will open the Find dialog box.

4. Now, while still holding the Control key, press the “V” key. The contents of the original cell will be pasted into the Find dialog box.

5. Finally, press Enter and Excel will go to the next cell that contains the word, number, or phrase you are looking for. Keep pressing Enter to move to the next cell.

This shortcut is very easy to do quickly by holding the control key down with your left pinky and use your index finger to press the “C,” “F,” and “V” keys. After you do it a couple of times you’ll be amazed at how fast you can search for something on your spread sheet.
