Avoid Opening and
Saving Files to a Floppy Disk
Opening files from and saving files to a floppy disk really slows
down most machines. Windows creates a lot of temporary files when it is
working and if you open a file from a floppy disk those temporary files
will be written to the floppy which is very slow compared to your hard
drive. Worst of all, if your floppy runs out of disk space your
application may even crash. If you need to open a file from a floppy
disk you should save it to your hard drive right away before you begin
work on the file. If you need to place it back on the floppy at the end
of your session that's no problem as long as you either begin working on
another file on your hard drive or quit Excel.
Taming the Office
Assistant
Some people love the Office Assistant and some people are truly
annoyed by this form of help. If you are one of the people who really
hates the office assistant, you can make it go away permanently by
deleting all of the *.ACT files from the C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Actors folder. A better approach is to modify how the
assistant behaves. Most people who dislike the assistant feel this way
because of its tendency to pop up when you don’t really need help. You
can change this by right clicking on the assistant and selecting
options. Then remove the check marks from features you dislike.
Generally most experienced users would prefer to turn off all the
features under the “Showing Tips About” section.
