Moving Around the Worksheet
Hyper-scroll
Everyone who has used Excel for any period of time has experienced
hyper-scroll. It happens when you are dragging something down and all
of the sudden you are at row 65000. The cursor just seems to take off.
The faster your computer the worse it is. Many people are not aware
that Microsoft added a feature to control hyper-scroll in Excel 97 and
later versions. When you just touch the bottom of the Excel sheet it
will move that direction slightly. If you move your cursor farther out
of the frame it will move faster in that direction.
Highlighting Ranges
Highlighting a range of cells is a common task in Excel. Most people do
most of their highlighting by using the mouse and holding down the left
mouse button. This works well for small ranges but can be time
consuming and frustrating (see hyper-scroll discussion in the above
example). The following are some techniques you can use that make it
easier and faster to highlight large ranges.
Shift Key with
Cursor Arrows
Use the keyboard to highlight a range if you
press the shift key first. This can be the best trick of the day if you
are still fighting with hyper-scroll.
Click, Scroll,
Shift Key + Click
For large range selections it is helpful to
first click on the starting cell, move the elevator box down the desired
end of the range and press shift + click. This will highlight
everything in the middle much quicker than the mouse or even keyboard
method.
Click bottom
right corner, Shift Key, Home
You can find the bottom right hand corner by
pressing the END HOME keys. Next, hold the Shift Key down and press
HOME. This will highlight everything you have entered into the
worksheet.
